Garden design in Surrey and south-west London

A measured plan, then the build: garden design in Surrey, delivered as one job.

A plan first, then the build

A garden design is a plan for how the space will be used, drawn before anything is built. Taylored Gardens prepares garden design in Surrey and south-west London, and then builds what it draws. Paving, planting, levels and lighting stay with one team rather than passing between separate firms.

What the garden design covers

The garden design sets the layout, the levels, the materials and the planting. We draw it after a garden consultation, once we have seen the space and heard how you use it. You then get a drawing you can read, a list of materials, and a cost for the build, before you agree any work.

From the survey to the plan

We measure the garden and note the levels, the access, the sun and what has to stay. The design then places the paving, the beds, the seating and any built features so the garden design works with those constraints. We specify the planting at the same time, rather than adding it once the hard landscaping is finished.

Designed around the way you use it

The brief decides the layout. For example, a household that eats outside wants the seating near the kitchen and out of the wind. One that wants quiet, however, wants the seating away from the road and screened. We plan the garden design for the use you describe, and we say so if the space will not do what you hope.

One garden at a time

Gardens differ in size, aspect and what is already there, so the design starts from the site rather than from a template. A small back garden and a large plot, however, get the same process: measure, plan, price, then build. The scope changes. The sequence does not.

Design and build, kept together

Because we build what we design, our garden designers draw the plan with the construction in mind: access for materials, levels we can actually build, and planting that suits the aftercare you want to give it. Our own garden construction team carries out the build.

We design gardens across Surrey and south-west London, including Richmond, Kingston, Esher and Wimbledon.

Frequently asked questions

Garden design in Surrey: common questions

What do I get from a garden design?

You get a measured drawing of the layout, the levels and the materials, a planting plan, and a cost for the build. We prepare it after we have seen the garden, not from photographs alone. If you want to read around first, the RHS has general advice on garden design.

Do you only offer garden design, or do you build as well?

Both. We produce the design so that we can build it, and most projects run that way. If you only want the design, however, ask: we will say whether that works for the project.

How long does the garden design stage take?

It depends on the size of the garden and how many revisions the brief needs. We agree a timescale at the consultation, once we have seen the site. We do not quote a fixed number of weeks here, because it varies.

Start with the garden

The first step is a garden consultation. Tell us about the space and what you want from it, and we will advise whether a design is the right next move.
